Checking up on Kanon and Jessica, the remaining nine find only her corpse behind the door to her room, marked with a pentagram. It is speculated that only one of the servants master keys could have locked the door and therefore they are suspected by Rosa, and further attention is directed at the missing Kanon as the culprit or that his key was used. Battler reflects on possible events and stumble across the fact that Kanon’s key is still in Jessica’s pocket.

Umineko no Naku Koro ni – 08

The servants discover and show Rosa the locked Chapel. On the doors, drawn in what appears to be blood is a pentacle symbol and writing spelling out ‘Happy Halloween for Maria’. Rosa finds the key in the letter Maria received earlier and opens the chapel doors only to stumble upon the corpses of her siblings, their stomachs gutted and filled with candy. The first twilight has begun.

On their way to the gathering, Rosa loses her temper at Maria’s passion for Halloween aswell as accepting candy from strangers, and turns to abuse. It is just before the family members arrive and the current residents of Rokkenjima prepare for the arrival of guests. While waiting for their boat, George practices his proposal and Maria shares some of her Halloween spirit with Battler. Kumasawa explains to Jessica some of the folklore/legend about the witch, Beatrice while being very gloomy and ominous.

We go back in time before the events that take place on Rokkenjima, Shannon and George are visiting an aquarium, they are on a date enjoying themselves as they confess their feelings to one another. It is now December 1985, and Shannon destroys a sacred mirror kept inside the Shrine overlooking the shore of the island, claiming that she kept her end of the bargain.

Maria still facing the wall, eerily singing her song, is interupted by a frightened Battler who is even more startled when he is told that the 3 people dead in the room were all murdered by Beatrice. Maria exclaims that Beatrice told her to face the wall and sing a song, that the eighth Twilight is over and Beatrice will revive.

The family members gather at the scene of the crime and a distraught George is devastated at the state of his parents. They decide to lock the door and wait for police to arrive to assess the situation. When a disgusting smell becomes the center of attention, Kanon and Kumasawa go to investigate.

Emotions ignite as the members of the Island come to grips with the recent horrific tragedy that has taken place in the rose garden shed. Everyone present is mortified, especially George who is revealed to his family as having proposed to Shannon, the sixth corpse in the shed.

The Epitaph under the Portrait

In the first episode of Umineko no Naku Koro ni, Ushiromiya Battler encounters the Epitaph under the portrait. It is known that in 1984, Ushiromiya Kinzo had commissioned the portrait of Beatrice to be painted and he displayed it alongside the mystifying and perplexing Epitaph.
